Repurposing

Our AKO (inquiry) focus for Terms 2 and 3 has been 'Repurposing'.  There has been a huge amount of self-directed learning happening throughout our school.

In the Senior classrooms, students worked in groups to create a company.  Their company had to design, manufacture and advertise a product using repurposed items.  Evidence of the process and budget are in each groups Google Presentation.

In Room 2 we had flax weaving, records turned into bowls and earring holders, plastic bottles turned into plant holders, buttons into jewellery, shell candles, hacky sacks from balloons and piggy banks from plastic bottles.

The learning concluded with an exciting Market Day where friends and family came to purchase items made.  It was really exciting and all of our groups sold out!

kidsedchat Teamwork Challenge

This afternoon we completed a teamwork challenge for kidsedchat.  The task was to work together to build the highest free-standing tower in a team using only 1 newspaper, 2 paper plates, 10 ice-block sticks and cellotape.

Before we started, we watched a video clip about the Spurs basketball team and how they work as a team.  Tomorrow during kidsedchat, we will tweet about what we achieved and the challenges involved with this task.

Congratulations to Ben, Caleb and Joe who created the highest free-standing tower.

Fractions Word Problem

Today we continued with another word problem.  We pulled it apart together, made calculations and then double-checked our answer.

Problem Solving - Fractions

Our Numeracy focus in Term 3 is Proportions and Ratios.  We have been looking at fractions and trying to improve our problem solving skills.  We have been attacking problems by identifying the key words and numbers in a problem.  We are also making sure that we actually provide the final answer.

Buddy Maths

On Friday 25 July, we had Buddy Maths.  The whole school is involved in this for Term 3.  Our class is buddied up with half of Room 8 who are new entrants or Year 1s.

We did an activity called 'The Mathematical Side of My Body'.  We used string and metre rulers to test some ideas.  One of the ideas to test was whether or not we are 'square' - this means that when your arms are spread out the distance from fingertips to fingertips is the same as your height.

We had heaps of fun.  It was fabulous to see 5 year olds working alongside us.

Junior Robocup 2014

A huge congratulations to our seven teams who competed at the regional Robotics competition in Wanganui yesterday.  The teams have worked incredibly hard on their projects and many have spent a lot of their own time on their robots.

A special congratulations to Room 2 students Durann, Jacob, Joe and Caleb who were placed 3rd in their section.  Also to Jackson as his team was highly commended.  I am very proud of you all.  Your commitment and hard work has been extraordinary - and has paid off!

Here are some highlights from yesterday prepared by Mr Webb.

MAD SCIENCE - 27 June

In our Mad Science Elective this week we looked at Coke.  We were testing experiments that we had seen or heard of.  This is what we tried:
1)  Milk in Coke - repeatedly shake and then let out the gas from the bottle - within the hour, the Coke had lost a lot of it's colour and we could see something settled on the bottom.  What was it?  Some thought sugar?
2)  What does Coke do to eggs?  We had three hard-boiled eggs and put one in vinegar, one in Coke and one in water.  Within the hour, the egg in Coke had bubbled on the surface.  What will have happened by Monday?
3)  Mentos in Coke - but not to make it explode, we wanted to turn it to ice.  This was a bit of a fail but we have some ideas to test next week!

A Fantastic Trick for Number Bonds

Today we learnt about a really quick way to calculate Number Bonds of up to 100 000.  Mr Spice showed the teachers on Monday afternoon.  To start with some of us had our doubts about how easy it really was.  But, after a few examples, it all became clear.

An example of a question would be 24 + ___ = 100
What we learnt was that the ones column has to add to 10 e.g. 4 + 6 = 10
The tens column (and anything higher, such as hundreds, has to add to 9 e.g. 2 + 7 = 9

So..24 + 76 = 100

Click on the link below to see our examples.  You do need to download the 'Explain Everything Player' but we're working on an easier way.  Everyone in Room 2 can access all maths lessons in their Google Drive.

Mad Science

On Friday in the Mad Science Elective we made 'fizzing paintings' and experimented with growing our own crystals.

To make fizzing paintings we mixed baking soda into paint and then afterwards, sprayed them with vinegar.

To grow crystals we dissolved as much salt or sugar as we could into hot water.  We have cotton string in the jars for the crystals to (hopefully) form on.

Treats from Hawaii

Room 1 have been collaborating with Ilima Intermediate School in Hawaii.  They had a Skype session and then were sent a package of Hawaiian foods.  Today Mr Chittenden decided that it would be great for the whole school to taste the spreads.  The overall opinion was that they tasted really good.  It's always interesting to step outside our comfort zone and try new foods.

Using Scratch to create a Ping Pong Game

This post is written by Jessica, who worked with Aliyha today.

Today we have been making games on Scratch. We had to learn to use scripts to program the game.  The aim of the game is to make sure you dont let the ball hit the blue and you have to hit the ball with the paddle.

Using Scratch to animate

Yesterday some members of Room 1 and 2 worked on creating animations using Scratch.  This is a post by Trevor.

Today we joined Scratch. We had to make an animation.  This is what I created with Travis.

Every week Room 2 participates in kidsedchatnz.  This is a twitter community that chats every Thursday from 2-3pm.  Each week there is a new topic with questions that we need to discuss and and answer.  We individually answer questions to express our own thoughts and opinions.

This week the topic was 'A Letter to my Grandchildren'.  The letter and questions can be viewed at the kidsedchatnz blog.

Some of our class wrote 'tweets of the week'.  Watch the slideshow below to see the amazing comments.

Te Reo with Mr Tai

Today is a pretty quiet day in Room 2 as our Year 7s are at technology in Opunake and some of our Year 6s are in Rahotu playing netball or rugby.  In fact, we only have 6 boys left in class!  Today for Te Reo, Room 3 joined us to build up the numbers.  Here is a short video of the beautiful singing that was happening today.

Koru Art

Last week we created Koru Art.  We had to create designs on paper using paint and dye.  We then drew koru, cut them out and glued them onto black paper.

Thanks to Trevor and Tamara for creating the Kizoa slideshow.  This was their first attempt at making one.

kidsedchatnz - ANZAC

Today Room 2 spent the day learning about ANZAC Day.  We had some questions from kidsedchatnz to answer in preparation for tweeting at 2pm today.  We watched some video clips and viewed images to give us some idea of what life was like for those who went to war.  It was also an interesting opportunity for the students to find out about their own relatives who had been to war.  One of the questions was to find out how ANZAC biscuits originated - it would have been crazy not to make them!

This was our third week participating in kidsedchat.  Quite a few of our Year 6s were away winning a league tournament today but everyone else tweeted today.  It was fantastic to see everyone having a go.

Turning Colouring In into 3D

I saw this exciting app tweeted by @palmyteacher.  The app is coLAR Mix.  The app itself is free and there are 9 pictures you can choose from in the free range.  There are three simple steps:
1)  download the app
2)  select and print the pictures and colour them in
3)  Go to the coLAR Mix app and hover an iPad, iPod or iPhone over the picture

Once your picture is 3D you can move the iPad around and the parts of the picture will move with it. You can also enlarge the 3D objects.

Adapting 'Zoo' by Anthony Browne

This post was written by Joe.

On Tuesday we read Zoo by Anthony Brown.  We reflected on the character, Dad.  In the story he was grouchy and mean.  Then We thought of how he would act in a different situation.  We chose a setting and wrote about it.  Here is the story I wrote about this dad going to the supermarket.

"$52, the sign said it was on sale".  "Sorry sir but...", "No I will not take this, you're robbing me".

He STORMED away from the counter and started putting a few things back.  He raced to the chocolate aisle, to his surprise it was empty.  "No" Dad screeched.  He ran over to a man talking to an old lady.  Dad grabbed him by the shoulders and shook him round like he was a pillow.  The man raced off and came back with a block of chocolate.  "Thanks" said Dad in a sarcastic voice.

He walked up to the counter.  "Sir, you are only allowed 17 items, you've got 18" said the cashier in a calm voice.  "Oh My Gosh, give me a break" shouted Dad.  He grabbed a carton of milk and threw it across the room.  "It's 17 items now" he bellowed.

He left the shopping centre and began walking towards the car.  Dad unpacked the eggs and the milk ........ unfortunately there was no room left in the boot.  He got mad alright.  For the whole ride home I was squashed between garlic bread and sausage rolls.  It was not fun

The day was a disaster...  but I did learn one thing, never go shopping with Dad.

Joining in with @Kidsedchatnz

Kidsedchatnz is a New Zealand school's twitter chat that takes place every Thursday between 2-3pm.  The aim is to motivate kids to be active, engaged and connected learners.  We had to be on Tweetdeck and subscribe to be part of the twitter chat.

Today Jacob, Danielle, Joe and Caleb represented Room 2 for the first time.  It was so exciting to be part of it as so many students around the country take part.

Getting into Blogging

Last Wednesday, Mr Chittenden spent the day in Room 2 helping us set up individual blogs.  It was a pretty intense day but the hard work was worth it.  Some students have been really enthusiastic about blogging and have written some posts from home.  It was great to see what people were doing for their long weekend (it was Taranaki Anniversary yesterday).

It has been pretty exciting to see page views climbing and also to see people commenting on the posts.

I have been very proud of the hard work put into blogging so far.  I can't wait to see future Room 2 posts.
